THE STORY OF EVERYTHING

Premiering in July 2022!

Created as a gift for his son before he was born, The Story of Everything is HI Poet Laureate Kealoha’s exploration of humanity’s rich and diverse explanations for the origins of life. Kealoha, a founder of the famed HawaiiSlam and an MIT nuclear physics graduate, says that, “The Story of Everything is my most important work and is the culmination of everything that I have learned throughout life. It took me half of my life to study the science behind this piece, half of my life to study the art of poetry and storytelling, and then about half a decade to actually create this work.”

In late 2014, Kealoha received support through the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation Pilot Community Inspiration Program to write an hour-long performance piece that could powerful demonstrate to young people where we all come from.  Utilizing musicians, performers and visual artists, an early version of The Story of Everything premiered in 2015 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The project grew in scope and ambition from there, and Kealoha premiered an expanded production as part of the 2017 Bioneers Conference in San Rafael, California.

Mona Abadir, CEO of Engaging the Senses Foundation, and Ron Singer, Engaging the Senses Foundation’s Director of Production, attended the Bioneers performance and were so struck by the power and potential of The Story of Everything that they proposed to make a film of the piece. Filmed before a green screen in Los Angeles in 2018, with additional filming of a sold-out performance at the Hawaii Theater in 2019, the film was completed in the fall of 2021.

Support for the original theater performance was provided by Hawai‘i Pacific University and Chaminade University. In addition to  Native Arts and Cultures Foundation, other past grants of support were provided by the Leonard & Rose Freeman Family Fund of the Hawai’i Community Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and Engaging the Senses Foundation.

In an era when we face both the knowledge that the historical and present-day injustices of systemic racism consistently expose people of color to reduced quality of life and that the world itself is in peril due to climate change, a project focused on light, on solutions, and on the transmission of hope is a cause for celebration!
