ARC and Poetry and the Senses, Fall 2023

Beth Piatote, Director of Arts Research Center at UC Berkeley and
Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and English, has announced an exciting fall lineup of events and appointments for fall 2023.

One of our valued partners in the arts, ARC has announced their chosen Fall 2023 cohort of Poetry Fellows for the multi-year Poetry & the Senses initiative, supported by ETSF, comprised of undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, and community members from Berkeley + the Bay Area, Arizona State University + the Tempe area, and the Nez Perce writers collective luk’upsíimey. These 13 fellows will work with facilitators Natalie Diaz (ASU) and Beth Piatote (Berkeley and luk’upsíimey) in bi-weekly working group meetings, focused on production and conversation centered around the theme of Reclamation.

Now in its fourth year, Poetry & the Senses explores the relevance and urgency of lyrical making and storytelling in times of political crisis, and the value of engaging the senses as an act of care, mindfulness, and resistance.

The Fall 2023 Fellows are Community Fellows Cody Achin, Julian Ankney, Angel Sobotta, Aimee Suzara, Ines Hernandez-Avila, and Taté Walker; Faculty Fellows Al-An deSouza and Sa Whitley; Graduate Fellows Ayling Zulemia Domingue, Cristina S. Mendez, and Marisa Lin; and Undergraduate Fellows Chris Hoshnic and Fede Kong-Gonzalez. You can learn all about each of them here.

ARC is also gearing up for a culminating Poetry & the Senses festival with readings, workshops, and other events by poetry fellows on Feb. 15-18, 2024. We hope you’ll mark your calendars for this rich, multi-faceted event, culled from four years of deep investigative dives into the connections between poetry, mindfulness, and action!

And as always, ARC is offering a wonderful line-up of free events this fall and throughout the academic year, including the new lunchtime series, The Loft Hour, to showcase new arts faculty; a four-day visit by Artist-In-Residence Tanya Lukin Linklater; an edgy Internet bus tour; and a raft of poetry readings, craft talks, and music events.

We’re looking so forward to the rich offerings that ARC and Poetry & the Senses will bring to the table this season, and are grateful for the commitment to excellence that our partners always exemplify. We hope you’ll join us, online and in person, for a season of poetry, art, and heart!
